With reference to the first paragraph
of my secret despatch of the 11th September, I have the honour to enclose translation of an extract from the Tsun Wan Yat Po of the 20th September, containing the text of the reply made by General Cheung Kai-shek to the letter of Marshal Sun Ch'uan-fang. It states that General Cheung will not hesitate to attack Marshal Sum, if the latter lingers on the former's flank and threatens his lines of communication.

Marshal Sun was at Kiu-kiang on the 22nd September according to information telegraphed by His Majesty's Consul at that port and is said to be going to the front at Wu-sueh,& port of call" on the Yangtzá

in Hupeh, where serious fighting is shortly expected.
In Kiang-si there was an outbreak in Nan-ch'ang, the capital of the province, by an irresponsible band of Cantonese, but the situation was
restored; and I enclose translation of an extract from
the Chung Wa Yat Po of the 21st September, reporting that certain combined forces of Kuang-tung, Kuang-hai
and Hunan troops will join with Marshal Sim to help
